Former Governor of Sokoto State and All Progressives Congress chieftain Senator Aliyu Wamakko has urged women to keep defending their votes to deepen Nigeria’s democracy. He made the appeal in a message marking International Women’s Day 2023, emphasizing that women’s contribution to the survival of democracy is immeasurable.
Wamakko noted that, in his Sokoto constituency, women have been at the forefront of active electoral participation for decades. He called on them to sustain their commitment to democratic governance by ensuring their votes continue to count. According to the senator, neither Sokoto State nor Nigeria’s democratic space would have achieved success without women’s valuable contributions.
“On this occasion of International Women’s Day 2023, I salute the resilience of our womenfolk and their commitment to voting in all elections as active participants in political transition,” Wamakko said. “I pray that Allah Almighty blesses the input of our women in deepening democracy, and I urge them to embrace the culture of defending their votes anywhere, any day, because they have the constitutional right to do so.”
