The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed allegations of political bias regarding access to Eagle Square in Abuja. He asserted that no formal application for the venue’s use had ever been submitted. During an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital, Wike clarified that the process for utilizing Eagle Square is transparent and managed by the Abuja Investments Company Limited. This process requires political parties to submit formal applications and pay the necessary fees.
Wike’s comments were in response to claims that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had been denied access to the venue. He characterized these allegations as attempts by the party to gain public sympathy. The minister emphasized that the rules governing venue access apply equally to all political parties. He provided examples of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), both of which had successfully used Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome after following the proper procedures. Wike explained that the Velodrome is not managed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration but by the Sports Commission. He reiterated that, as of now, no formal application has been received from any party wishing to use Eagle Square.
Furthermore, the minister reaffirmed the FCT administration’s commitment to neutrality and fairness in the allocation of public venues, as long as applicants adhere to the established guidelines. During his inspection, Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress of key infrastructure projects in Abuja. He noted that contractors have assured the completion of major roadworks by May 15, with streetlight installations expected to be finalized by the end of the month. Wike’s remarks come at a time of heightened political activity as parties prepare for upcoming elections, seeking suitable venues for rallies and events. His stance highlights the administration’s dedication to maintaining order and transparency in the use of public facilities.
