At least 16 people, primarily students, have been injured in a shooting at a vocational high school in Siverek, located in Turkey’s southeastern Sanliurfa province, as confirmed by local authorities. The attacker, an 18-year-old former student, began his assault by opening fire with a shotgun in the schoolyard before entering the building and ultimately taking his own life, according to Sanliurfa Governor Hasan Sildak. Among the wounded are ten students, four teachers, a police officer, and a canteen operator.
Footage from the scene depicted students fleeing the school in panic as the incident unfolded. Reports indicate that one teacher is in serious condition, as stated by broadcaster NTV. Initial accounts suggested that the gunman had taken several students hostage before special forces surrounded the building. He reportedly refused to surrender and later committed suicide with the same weapon.
Authorities are currently investigating the attacker’s motives, and the incident has raised new concerns regarding school safety in the region. This attack follows a series of violent episodes in educational settings worldwide, including a recent stabbing at a kindergarten in Uganda that resulted in multiple child fatalities. Officials have yet to provide additional details about the suspect’s background or any potential warning signs that may have preceded the attack.
