Osun Governorship Election 2026: CDHR Warns of Tension Over INEC REC Redeployment

Tensions have escalated in Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election, with the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) raising concerns over the recent redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Mutiu Agboke. In a joint statement issued by Comrade Yinka Folarin, National President, and Comrade Adewunmi Adesina, National Publicity Secretary, the rights group warned that the timing of the transfer could undermine public confidence in the electoral process if not handled transparently.

While acknowledging that staff postings fall within the mandate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the CDHR said the decision has sparked anxiety among political stakeholders, particularly as campaigns begin to gain momentum. The group noted that the appointment of the incoming REC, Mrs Toyin Babalola, has already triggered protests and dissatisfaction in parts of the state, which it described as early indicators of deeper political unease.

“The timing and circumstances surrounding this decision have generated widespread suspicion and tension among stakeholders in Osun State,” the statement read. The CDHR stressed that electoral credibility hinges not only on INEC’s assurances but also on how sensitive decisions are managed in the lead-up to the polls.

To mitigate concerns of bias or regional influence, the group called for the appointment of a replacement from outside Osun State’s immediate region. “We strongly demand that a new Resident Electoral Commissioner, preferably from either the Northern or South-Eastern region of Nigeria, be deployed to Osun State,” the statement urged, arguing that such a move would help restore trust and ensure neutrality in the electoral process.

The CDHR cautioned that failure to address these concerns could erode public confidence in INEC and cast doubt on the fairness of the forthcoming governorship election. As political activities intensify, the organisation urged INEC to act swiftly to reassure citizens and maintain the integrity of the democratic process in Osun State.
