Barcelona President Blames Champions League Exit on Refereeing Decisions

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has accused match officials of influencing his club’s Champions League elimination, pointing to a series of contentious decisions during their quarter-final tie against Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish giants’ European campaign ended in controversial circumstances following the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium. Barcelona had taken a two-goal lead in the return fixture but ultimately fell short as Atletico progressed.

Laporta’s criticism centres on three specific incidents during the tie. In the first leg at the Nou Camp, defender Pau Cubarsi received a straight red card for a last-man challenge. The Barcelona president maintains this decision was incorrect and that his team should have been awarded a penalty in the same match.

The second leg saw further controversy when Ferran Torres had what would have been Barcelona’s third goal disallowed. Later in the match, Eric Garcia was shown a red card, which Laporta described as “wrong.” The president argued that teammate Jules Koundé was positioned to challenge for the ball, making Garcia not the last defender.

Laporta also highlighted what he believes was a missed penalty on Dani Olmo and expressed frustration that no disciplinary action was taken after forward Fermín López sustained a facial injury during play.

The Catalan club’s Champions League exit marks another disappointing European campaign, coming shortly after their domestic league title triumph. Barcelona now turns their attention to the Copa del Rey, where they remain in contention.

The incidents have reignited discussions about refereeing standards in European football, with Barcelona joining other clubs who have questioned key decisions in this season’s competition. UEFA has yet to respond to Laporta’s specific complaints.
