Enugu State is witnessing a significant shift in its political landscape as the 2027 governorship election approaches. Uche Nnaji, former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, has formally declared his intention to contest the governorship seat, setting the stage for a high-profile race against incumbent Governor Peter Mbah.
Nnaji, who previously led the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State before Mbah’s defection to the party, made his announcement during a consultative workshop with political supporters. His entry into the race adds a new dimension to the state’s political dynamics, particularly given his pledge to serve only a single four-year term if elected.
The former minister’s decision is rooted in respect for Enugu State’s zoning arrangement, which stipulates that power should rotate among the state’s three senatorial districts. Under this arrangement, the Enugu West Senatorial District is expected to produce the next governor in 2031. Nnaji emphasized that his commitment to a one-term tenure is deliberate and aimed at preserving political balance and fairness in the state.
“I will serve only one term of four years if elected governor in 2027,” Nnaji stated. “This decision is based on my deep respect for the zoning structure in Enugu State, which has helped maintain political balance, fairness, and unity among our people over the years.”
Nnaji stressed that his focus is on laying a solid foundation for Enugu’s economic and industrial development within his proposed tenure. He highlighted the state’s untapped economic potential and lamented years of poor resource management. To ensure continuity beyond his term, he pledged to support the emergence of a capable successor from Enugu West in 2031.
Drawing parallels to past governance, Nnaji referenced the achievements of former Anambra State Governor Jim Nwobodo, who executed impactful projects during his four-year tenure from 1979 to 1983. “Transformational leadership is not about how long you stay in office, but what you are able to do with the time you have,” he remarked.
As the 2027 election draws nearer, Nnaji’s candidacy and his commitment to the zoning arrangement are likely to shape the political discourse in Enugu State, with implications for governance, equity, and long-term development.
