NNL: Sporting Lagos clinch return ticket to NPFL

Sporting Lagos has secured promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following a 1-0 victory over Osun United on Thursday. The decisive goal was scored by Alex Leme in the 17th minute, ensuring their return to the top flight after a two-year absence. Under the management of Jeffrey Butler, Sporting Lagos finished at the top of Conference B with 36 points from 18 matches.

Their promotion adds to the growing list of clubs returning to the NPFL, which already includes Inter Lagos and Doma United. In related fixtures, Akwa United claimed second place in the conference with a narrow 2-1 win over Solution FC. The Promise Keepers took the lead through Aniebiet Sunday in the 50th minute, followed by Michael Okenwa, who doubled the advantage just three minutes later. Although Solution FC managed to score late in the game, it was not enough to change the standings.

Sporting Lagos’ promotion represents a significant achievement for the club and its supporters, who have witnessed their team rise through the ranks to reclaim a position among Nigeria’s elite football clubs. As the NPFL prepares for the new season, it will feature an expanded roster of teams, reflecting the competitive nature of Nigeria’s domestic football landscape.
