Darlington Nnaoma Onyekacha, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, has urged Nigerian governors and State Houses of Assembly to ensure that monthly federal allocations are utilized transparently and effectively. This call aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive on prudent resource management. Onyekacha made these remarks on Thursday in Ikwuano while announcing his candidacy for a seat in the Abia State House of Assembly.
He expressed deep concern over the ongoing underdevelopment of rural communities across Nigeria. Despite significant inflows of funds to states and local government areas, issues such as poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and infrastructure deficits persist at alarming levels in rural regions. Onyekacha pointed out that the situation is worsened by the perceived failure of State Houses of Assembly to hold governors and local government executives accountable for the federal funds they receive.
“Most of the challenges Nigeria faces today originate at the rural and state levels, not from the presidency,” Onyekacha stated. He emphasized that the president is providing the necessary resources to build the states, but the problem lies in poor leadership within state governments and State Houses of Assembly.
Onyekacha pledged to be a strong, independent voice for his Ikwuano constituency, dedicated to ensuring that every resource allocated for community development is effectively utilized. He highlighted that effective legislative oversight and responsible governance are essential to addressing Nigeria’s rural challenges and unlocking the country’s development potential.
