Darlington Nnaoma Onyekacha, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, has called on Nigerian governors and State Houses of Assembly to ensure that monthly federal allocations are used transparently and effectively, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive on prudent resource management.
Speaking on Thursday in Ikwuano while announcing his bid to contest for a seat in the Abia State House of Assembly, Onyekacha expressed deep concern over the persistent underdevelopment of rural communities across Nigeria. He noted that despite substantial inflows of funds to states and local government areas, poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and infrastructure deficits remain alarmingly high in rural regions.
According to him, the situation is exacerbated by the perceived failure of State Houses of Assembly to hold governors and local government executives accountable for the funds they receive from the federal government. “Most of the challenges Nigeria faces today originate at the rural and state levels, not from the presidency,” Onyekacha said. “It is not that the president is not releasing what it takes to build the states, but because of bad leadership in state governments and State Houses of Assembly.”
He pledged to serve as a strong, independent voice for his Ikwuano constituency, committed to ensuring that every resource allocated for community development is properly utilized. Onyekacha emphasized that effective legislative oversight and responsible governance are critical to addressing Nigeria’s rural challenges and unlocking the country’s development potential.
