Airtel Nigeria has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit services in compliance with new regulations issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The decision, announced by Ismail Adeshina, the company’s Director of Marketing, follows the introduction of the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025.
The suspended services previously allowed eligible prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data and repay the amounts during their next recharge. Adeshina clarified that the suspension would not disrupt customers’ ability to purchase airtime and data through Airtel’s existing channels. He also reassured users that the temporary measure was not expected to materially impact service delivery nationwide.
“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving regulatory requirements,” Adeshina stated. “Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”
The FCCPC’s new framework introduces a compliance and licensing regime for companies offering digital or non-traditional consumer credit services in Nigeria. Airtel has pledged to provide updates on the status of the suspended services as the regulatory landscape develops.
The move underscores the growing regulatory oversight of digital financial services in Nigeria, as authorities seek to ensure consumer protection and fair practices in the sector. Airtel’s compliance reflects its commitment to operating within the evolving legal framework while maintaining service quality for its customers.
