Abia Govt vows to ensure justice as driver shot by soldier dies

The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has inaugurated a dedicated task force aimed at combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable citizens from exploitation. This initiative, known as the Abia State Task Force Against Human Trafficking, is chaired by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN, and was formally launched in Umuahia.

During the launch, Governor Alex Otti, represented by Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, described the task force as a strategic and urgent measure to enhance the state’s response to trafficking and to safeguard human dignity. He emphasized that trafficking networks are frequently linked to organized crime, including drug trafficking and transnational criminal syndicates. Governor Otti highlighted the devastating impact of these activities on families and communities, advocating for a comprehensive approach that integrates enforcement, rehabilitation, and the reintegration of victims.

NAPTIP Director-General Mrs. Binta Adamu Bello noted that Abia is now the 25th Nigerian state to establish a NAPTIP-supported task force, reflecting a growing national effort to address this global issue. She underscored the necessity of coordinated action to dismantle trafficking operations and provide support for survivors. Attorney-General Uwanna expressed confidence that the task force would prevent Abia from becoming a safe haven for traffickers, pledging full legal backing for its operations.

The establishment of the task force signifies a broader commitment to tackling human trafficking through multi-agency collaboration, victim support, and enhanced law enforcement. Officials emphasized that sustained vigilance and community engagement will be crucial in disrupting trafficking networks and upholding the rights of vulnerable populations in Abia State.
