Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Calls for Release of Igbo Youths Detained Without Trial

LAGOS — Nnamdi Kanu’s legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate and unconditional release of Igbo youths allegedly detained across Nigeria without trial.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Ejimakor voiced alarm over what he described as the continued detention of “thousands of Igbo youths” on suspicion of affiliation with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“All people of conscience should urge President Tinubu to direct the unconditional release of the thousands of IGBO youths detained without trial across Nigeria on the mere suspicion that they’re IPOB,” he wrote.

Ejimakor argued that prolonged detention without due process violates fundamental principles of justice and the rule of law. He called for either formal charges or immediate release for those in custody.

His comments come amid ongoing debates over security operations in Nigeria’s South-East, where authorities have carried out mass arrests linked to the now-proscribed separatist group.

The Federal Government has designated IPOB as a terrorist organization and accused it of financing terrorism. Ejimakor, however, challenged that designation, maintaining that due process must be upheld in all cases.

The lawyer’s appeal highlights persistent concerns over arbitrary arrests and the treatment of detainees in Nigeria’s South-East, an issue that continues to fuel tensions between security agencies and local communities.
