Nnamdi Kanu life imprisonment: Igbos unhappy, will show their feeling in 2027 elections - Ejimakor

LAGOS — Nnamdi Kanu’s legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate and unconditional release of Igbo youths allegedly detained across Nigeria without trial. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Ejimakor expressed his alarm regarding the ongoing detention of what he described as “thousands of Igbo youths” suspected of being affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He urged all people of conscience to press President Tinubu to direct the unconditional release of these individuals, who are being held solely on the suspicion of their association with IPOB.

Ejimakor emphasized that prolonged detention without due process is a violation of fundamental principles of justice and the rule of law. He insisted that those in custody should either face formal charges or be released immediately. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about security operations in Nigeria’s South-East, where authorities have conducted mass arrests linked to the now-proscribed separatist group. The Federal Government has classified IPOB as a terrorist organization and has accused it of financing terrorism. However, Ejimakor challenged this designation, asserting that due process must be maintained in all cases.

The lawyer’s appeal underscores persistent concerns regarding arbitrary arrests and the treatment of detainees in Nigeria’s South-East. This issue continues to exacerbate tensions between security agencies and local communities, highlighting the need for a more just and transparent legal process.
