Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Council, Imo State, has suspended its Vice Chairman, Prince Mathew Igbokwe, indefinitely following allegations of armed robbery and administrative misconduct.
The Council’s Legislative Assembly made the decision during a plenary session, citing a series of serious allegations, including repeated absence from official duties and unauthorized travel outside the state. The Assembly also accused Igbokwe of involvement in armed robbery and other unspecified crimes, claiming his arrest and detention by the Lagos State Police Command as evidence.
In a press statement signed by the Legislative members under the leadership of Benson Mgbechi, the Assembly emphasized that Igbokwe’s alleged actions have brought shame and ridicule to the Imo State Government, the Executive Chairman of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government, and the council’s residents. The statement described his conduct as unbecoming of a high-ranking public servant and stressed the need to protect the council’s reputation.
The motion for suspension was moved by Chief Whip Ajaa Echezolachi, seconded by Deputy Leader Steven Echeta, and adopted by members present. The Assembly gave Igbokwe a seven-day ultimatum to appear before it to address the allegations.
The Legislative body stated that its actions were firmly rooted in the provisions of law No. 6, 2022 of the Nigerian Constitution of Administration as amended. It described the move as crucial to salvaging the council’s image and demonstrating that Ezinihitte Mbaise residents are not associated with such conduct.
The suspension underscores the Assembly’s commitment to upholding accountability and integrity in local governance. Further developments are expected as the case unfolds.
