PDP NEC Meeting: Key Leaders Gather After Abuja Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday at its Abuja headquarters, marking the first such gathering since the secretariat was unsealed last week. The meeting comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the party, which have seen rival factions vie for control.

The PDP secretariat was sealed in November 2023 following violent clashes between the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee and the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee, both claiming legitimacy as the party’s leadership. The dispute escalated after an Appeal Court judgment in March 2024 invalidated the Ibadan convention that had produced the Turaki-led leadership. The Abdulrahman Mohammed faction, which enjoys the backing of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, subsequently organized an Abuja convention to consolidate its position.

Monday’s NEC meeting is expected to be attended by members aligned with the Mohammed-led PDP, including prominent figures such as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. The gathering is anticipated to address the party’s internal divisions and chart a path forward ahead of upcoming political engagements.

The PDP’s leadership crisis has drawn significant attention within Nigeria’s political landscape, with implications for the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects. As the NEC meeting unfolds, stakeholders will be closely watching for decisions that could shape the party’s direction and unity in the months ahead. Further details are expected to emerge following the meeting.
