In a significant counter‑terrorism operation, troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Hadin Kai recovered an anti‑aircraft machine gun and several rounds of ammunition in Borno State. Security analyst and counter‑insurgency expert Zagazola Makama reported that the recovery took place on 21 April 2026 during follow‑up operations in Nanewa village, after an earlier firefight in which several terrorists were neutralised.
Military sources said that while conducting mop‑up operations along the withdrawal route of fleeing insurgents, troops discovered the heavy weapon together with multiple rounds of 7.62×54 mm ammunition. The items appear to have been abandoned during the earlier engagement. Evidence of the encounter was found along the escape route, including traces of blood that suggest some of the terrorists sustained injuries during the firefight.
The recovered weapons and ammunition have been secured by military authorities for further analysis and documentation. This operation demonstrates the ongoing efforts of Nigerian security forces to combat insurgency and recover illicit arms in the region. Operation Hadin Kai, the military campaign against terrorist groups in northeastern Nigeria, continues to conduct clearance operations and engage insurgents in Borno State and surrounding areas.
