Saudi Arabia seeks partnership with FCT on green city, security, economy

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in partnering with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration on security, economic development, green‑city initiatives, and other areas of mutual benefit. The proposal was made by Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al‑Balawi, during a courtesy visit to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ambassador Al‑Balawi praised the minister and President Bola Tinubu’s administration for transforming Abuja into a “beautiful green city.” He emphasized his desire to strengthen ties between the FCT and Riyadh, as well as other major Saudi cities, highlighting the importance of exchanging expertise in developing sustainable urban environments.

In response, Minister Wike acknowledged the strong relationship between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, noting that the FCT would leverage this partnership for the territory’s benefit. He expressed willingness to visit Riyadh and other Saudi cities to identify common interests and foster collaboration. “Saudi Arabia is a very important state in the Gulf region with a rich history and robust relationship with Nigeria,” Wike said. “We aim to capitalize on this good relationship to see how Riyadh and the FCT can cooperate and learn from each other.”

The minister thanked Al‑Balawi for recognizing the ongoing transformation in the FCT, attributing the progress to President Tinubu’s political will. Wike explained that the current administration has been working to modernize Abuja to compete with cities worldwide. “We have not yet reached our ultimate goal, but the Tinubu administration is committed and has what it takes to elevate the capital city to the global stage,” he concluded.

This potential partnership between the FCT and Saudi Arabia could lead to significant developments in urban planning, environmental sustainability, and economic cooperation, benefiting both regions and strengthening ties between Nigeria and the Gulf state.
