Asake Credits Lagos for Career Breakthrough and Musical Growth

Nigerian singer Ahmed Ololade, better known as Asake, has credited Lagos with shaping his artistic development and personal growth. In an interview with Spotify, the singer explained that moving to the city after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ilé‑Ifè was pivotal to his transition into adulthood and to the creation of much of his music.

Asake, whose stage name “Sungba” has become synonymous with a string of hit singles, told the interview that Lagos offered both the environment and the experiences that informed his songwriting. “Lagos taught me how to live like a man. Lagos inspired most of my songs,” he said.

The artist highlighted the broader challenge facing Nigerian musicians, noting that many talented performers remain unheard. He expressed gratitude for the platform his music has received both locally and internationally. “I’m happy because there are a lot of people who make music out there and a lot of people who are more talented than me. I’m thankful to God that I’m able to use the talent He gave me – not only locally but also globally. So for that, I give all thanks to God,” Asake added.

Asake’s rise mirrors a growing trend of artists relocating to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial and cultural hub, to access larger audiences, industry networks, and production resources. The city’s vibrant music scene—characterized by a mix of Afrobeats, hip‑hop, and traditional sounds—has attracted talent from across the country, reinforcing its status as a launchpad for global Nigerian music.

The singer’s remarks underscore the importance of urban centers like Lagos in nurturing creative talent and provide insight into the personal journeys behind the nation’s expanding music export. As Asake continues to gain international recognition, his experience highlights both the opportunities and the competitive pressures within Nigeria’s flourishing entertainment industry.
