Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate who contested the Ogun State governorship in 2023, has formally announced his intention to run again for the state’s top office in the 2027 general election. The declaration was made in a letter addressed to PDP officials at both state and local government levels and was released to the press on Friday by Adebutu’s media aide, Afolabi Orekoya.
The letter, dated 30 April 2026, was directed to the PDP Chairman of Ogun State and to the party leadership in Odogbolu Local Government Area. In the correspondence, Adebutu thanked party leaders and members for their continued support and loyalty. He emphasized the need for unity and a shared vision as the party begins preparations for the upcoming electoral cycle.
Adebutu reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP’s ideals and pledged to provide purposeful leadership for the people of Ogun State. He highlighted his long‑standing involvement in the party, citing contributions to strengthening the PDP’s structure and influence across the state. Describing himself as a “loyal and law‑abiding member,” he said his decision to seek a second term is driven by the desire to build on past experiences and deliver impactful governance.
The candidate outlined three pillars for his prospective administration: continuity of proven programs, people‑focused policies, and inclusive development. He urged all party stakeholders to remain united and concentrated on the common objective, noting that internal cohesion will be essential for success in the 2027 polls. Adebutu also pledged to collaborate with all interests within the PDP to advance a shared agenda.
Adebutu’s 2023 campaign, which ended in a narrow defeat, positioned him as a significant figure in Ogun State politics. His renewed candidacy reflects the PDP’s strategy to leverage experienced cadres in its bid to regain the governorship after a period of opposition rule. The party is expected to convene a series of consultative meetings in the coming months to finalize its candidate slate and campaign platform.
The announcement comes as several opposition parties and incumbents begin outlining their own strategies for the 2027 elections. Observers note that the PDP’s internal unity and ability to mobilise its grassroots network will be critical factors in determining the competitiveness of Adebutu’s candidacy.
Adebutu’s formal declaration adds a decisive element to the political landscape in Ogun State, setting the stage for intensified preparations ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Media Talk Africa will continue to monitor developments as parties finalize their tickets and campaign programmes.
