The Obidient Movement called for calm on Saturday as rumours of a political realignment involving Peter Obi and other opposition figures continued to circulate. In a statement posted on X, the movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, said Obi was engaged in consultations with allies and stakeholders to chart “the most strategic and effective path forward” for Nigeria.
Tanko acknowledged the “growing concerns and widespread reports” about recent developments in the political landscape and the group’s ongoing engagement with current and potential partners. The statement urged members of the Obidient Movement to remain patient, focused and unswayed by speculative reports. “Peter Obi remains fully committed to this mission and will, in due course, formally address the Obidient Movement and the general public to provide clarity on the current situation and the direction ahead,” it read.
The movement emphasized that its ongoing consultations are guided by the principles of integrity, accountability and citizen participation, and that any outcome will be consistent with its vision of a “New Nigeria.” “Our strength lies in our unity and focus. Let us remain steadfast as we await further communication,” the statement added.
The call for restraint comes amid media reports suggesting that Obi may be negotiating a broader opposition alliance with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the next election cycle. Kwankwaso, a veteran politician who has previously forged coalitions with other opposition parties, is seen by some analysts as a potential partner for Obi’s campaign platform, which centers on economic reform, anti‑corruption measures and national unity.
Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and a presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has continued to position himself as a reformist alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Since the election, the Obidient Movement has functioned as a loosely organised network of supporters advocating for systemic change. The group has repeatedly called for transparent, inclusive political processes and has resisted overt mergers with established parties.
While the movement’s statement refrains from confirming any formal partnership, it underscores a strategic approach to coalition‑building that seeks to preserve the group’s core values. Observers note that any alliance involving Obi and Kwankwaso could reshape the opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections, potentially consolidating votes against the incumbent administration.
The Obidient Movement indicated that further updates will be provided once internal deliberations are concluded. In the meantime, supporters are advised to stay informed through official channels and to avoid dissemination of unverified information.
