The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reiterated its commitment to contest the 2027 general elections, dismissing recent rumors that it would withdraw from the race. In a statement released by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party affirmed that it remains focused on presenting a credible presidential candidate and on mobilising support to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The ADC’s communication came after speculation in some quarters suggested that the party might not field candidates in the 2027 polls. Abdullahi described those suggestions as “unfounded, mischievous scaremongering” with no basis in law or fact. He stressed that the ADC is fully compliant with the Constitution and the Electoral Act, and that no legal impediment exists that would prevent its participation.
According to the statement, the ADC’s primary objective is to “rescue Nigeria from the misgovernance of the APC‑led government and to avert a slide toward a one‑party state.” The party positioned itself as the leading opposition platform, emphasizing the need to organise, mobilise and prepare for a competitive electoral contest. It pledged to field “credible, competent and nationally acceptable” candidates who can address the country’s current challenges.
The ADC also called on Nigerians to disregard “baseless assertions” and warned that attempts to undermine the party’s momentum are intended to create confusion. The statement underscored the party’s ongoing efforts to build the necessary structures at national, state and local levels to contest elections at all tiers of government.
The reaffirmation of its electoral ambitions comes at a time when opposition parties in Nigeria are seeking to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections, scheduled for February 2027. The ADC’s clarification aims to solidify its standing among voters and political observers as a viable alternative to the incumbent APC.
The party’s next steps include intensified grassroots engagement, policy development and the selection of a presidential ticket in line with its stated mission to provide a credible alternative to the current administration.
