No fewer than six current members of the House of Representatives were elected to the Senate in the National Assembly election held on 25 February 2023. According to the list of winners released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, these lawmakers will move from representing federal constituencies to senatorial districts. In addition, two former House members have also secured seats in the Red Chamber.
The current Majority Whip of the House, Mohammed Monguno, who represents the Monguno/Marte/Ganzai Federal Constituency in Borno State, will now serve Borno North Senatorial District in the 10th Assembly as an APC member. Likewise, Adeyemi Adaramodu, presently representing the Ekiti South‑West/Ikere/Ise/Orun Federal Constituency, will represent Ekiti South Senatorial District on the APC platform.
From Abia State, Darlington Nwokocha, who serves the Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency, will now represent Abia Central Senatorial District under the Labour Party. In the next Assembly, Simon Mwadkwon will switch from representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency to Plateau North Senatorial District in Plateau State as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. Similarly, Nasiru Sani, formerly of Zango/Buare Federal Constituency, will represent Katsina North Senatorial District, and Muntari Dandutse, who represented Funtua/Dandume Federal Constituency, will now serve Katsina South Senatorial District; both will sit under the APC banner.
The two former House members now elected to the Senate are Kawu Sumaila and Sunday Karimi. Sumaila represented Sumaila/Takai Federal Constituency for three terms (2003‑2007, 2007‑2011, 2011‑2015) in the 6th, 7th and 8th Assemblies, serving as Deputy Minority Leader in the 6th and 7th Houses. He has been elected to represent Kano South Senatorial District under the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Karimi left the House in 2019 after representing Yagba‑East/Yagba‑West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency in Kogi State; he now represents Kogi West Senatorial District under the APC.
