Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has expressed condolences over the death of Kingsley Uchegbu, a reporter for Independent Television and Radio who was seconded to the Edo State Government House. The governor’s office confirmed that Uchegbu died on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, after a short illness in Benin City.
Okpebholo visited the family’s residence in Benin City, accompanied by a delegation headed by Chief of Staff Hon. Yakubu Musa. Present were Commissioner for Information Prince Kassim Afegbua, Commissioner for Special Duties Hon. Ken Ihensenken, Chief Press Secretary Dr. Patrick Ebojele, Special Adviser on Electronic Media Paul Ezenwa and members of the Government House Press Corps.
During the condolence visit the governor’s representatives assured Mrs. Chineyeamara Uchegbu, the widow, that the state would provide assistance to the bereaved family. “We will not leave you alone,” the delegation said. “The government will be part of the process that gives succour to you and your children.” They described Uchegbu as a dedicated, humble professional who led a simple life.
Dr. Magnus Oshiogwe, a church elder from Winners Chapel who spoke on behalf of the family, thanked the officials for their prompt visit, noting that it demonstrated respect for the late journalist. He appealed for any support the government could offer, saying it would alleviate the family’s suffering.
Kingsley Uchegbu had been employed by Independent Television and Radio, serving in the Government House Press unit. He is survived by his wife, his children and his elderly mother.
The governor’s office has not disclosed the specific nature of the assistance that will be extended to the family. The visit underscores the administration’s commitment to supporting the relatives of public servants who die while in service.
Uchegbu’s death has been reported by Media Talk Africa and is noted as a loss to the media community in Edo State. The government’s response reflects broader protocols for condolence and support for the families of civil servants in Nigeria.
