Rano Air announced on Friday that it will temporarily suspend several routes due to a sharp rise in jet fuel costs. The airline posted the statement on its X account, explaining that the heightened operational expenses have rendered the affected services commercially unsustainable.
According to the announcement, the surge in aviation fuel prices has placed “enormous pressure” on flight operations across the sector. Rano Air described the suspension as a “difficult but necessary” measure aimed at preserving safe, reliable and sustainable service.
The carrier did not specify which routes will be affected. Passengers with existing bookings on the suspended services are being offered assistance with refunds, rescheduling or alternative routing. A customer‑service team has been placed on standby to guide affected travelers through the available options.
Rano Air added that the suspensions are temporary and that flights will resume once fuel prices stabilize and the routes become operationally viable. The airline emphasized its ongoing commitment to quality service and thanked passengers, partners and stakeholders for their patience and support during the “challenging period.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that aviation fuel prices in the country have risen dramatically since February, with a 300 % increase recorded. Prices climbed from roughly ₦900 per unit in February to between ₦2,037 and ₦3,300 in April. Industry insiders attribute the spike to supply constraints linked to the Middle‑East crisis.
The fuel price surge has prompted other domestic carriers to adjust their schedules as well. For example, Air Peace has reduced its Abuja‑to‑London frequency to three flights per week, according to NAN.
Rano Air’s suspension highlights the broader impact of fuel price volatility on airline economics in the region. As carriers await a stabilization of fuel costs, passengers may experience further schedule changes and fare adjustments. The airline has indicated that it will monitor the situation closely and communicate any further developments promptly.
