Kano Governor Abba Yusuf has successfully resolved the prolonged contest for the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Kano Central, resulting in former governor and senator Ibrahim Shekarau emerging as the party’s consensus candidate. This significant development was announced on Sunday by Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, following a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by Yusuf in Abuja. The meeting included all aspirants, party officials, and other stakeholders, who collectively agreed to support Shekarau in the interest of party cohesion, state development, and the broader political future of Kano.
Dawakin-Tofa reported that the governor’s intervention led to the voluntary withdrawal of eight aspirants, who endorsed Shekarau as the APC flagbearer for the country’s most populous senatorial district. Kano Central, which comprises fifteen local government areas and is home to over 10 million residents, plays a crucial role in national representation. The consensus reached has been welcomed by party members and political observers as a significant milestone. Usman Bala, spokesperson for the withdrawing aspirants, emphasized that the decision demonstrated respect for Shekarau and confidence in the governor’s peace initiative. He stated, “All eight aspirants unanimously supported the governor’s call for unity,” describing the outcome as a timely and wise intervention that aligned competing interests toward a common goal.
Shekarau, who served as Kano’s governor from 2003 to 2011 and later as a senator, commended Yusuf for fostering “lasting peace” among the contenders. He expressed gratitude to the aspirants for their willingness to unite behind him and other APC candidates in preparation for the 2027 general elections. In a statement released after the meeting, Yusuf praised the aspirants for prioritizing the collective interest of Kano’s citizens over personal ambitions. He characterized their decision as a demonstration of maturity, sacrifice, and commitment to democratic values.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to dialogue, inclusion, and consensus-building as essential tools for political stability and sustainable development. This arrangement is anticipated to strengthen Kano’s influence within the APC and at the national level as the party gears up for the upcoming election cycle. Observers note that a unified ticket could enhance the party’s campaign coherence in a state that often serves as a bellwether in Nigerian politics. With the senatorial contest settled, attention now shifts to the broader 2027 electoral landscape, where Kano’s unified stance may significantly impact the balance of power both within the APC and across Nigeria’s multipartite system.
