The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that a joint operation with United States Africa Command on 16 May 2026 resulted in the death of senior Islamic State operative Abu‑Bilal Al‑Minuki. The strike, carried out in Nigeria’s north‑eastern region, was described by DHQ Director of Defence Information, Somalia Uba, as a “significant achievement” in the country’s counter‑terrorism campaign.

The operation has sparked confusion after some media outlets recalled a similar 2024 raid that also targeted an individual named Abu‑Bilal Al‑Minuki. DHQ clarified that the use of identical or near‑identical noms de guerre is common among militants of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram. The repetition of aliases is a deliberate tactic intended to obscure identities and complicate intelligence work.

According to the DHQ, human‑intelligence sources and technical surveillance positively identified the May‑2026 target as a senior global operative with direct links to international terrorist financing, coordination and operations across the Sahel region. The statement emphasized that there is no ambiguity about the individual neutralised on 16 May.

The DHQ underscored that the successful strike reflects the continued partnership between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States in dismantling terrorist networks. It urged journalists and the public to rely on official communications for verified information, warning that name similarities can lead to misinformation.

The elimination of Abu‑Bilal Al‑Minuki is expected to disrupt ISWAP’s command structure and its links to broader trans‑regional extremist networks. Nigerian authorities said they will sustain collaborative efforts with international partners and maintain transparent reporting through authorized channels as the fight against terrorism proceeds.
