Match of the Day 2 on BBC is likely to proceed without host Mark Chapman, and the programme is expected to adopt a scaled‑down format similar to Saturday night’s Match of the Day. The new version will feature no pundits, presenters or commentary. This reduction follows the removal of lead presenter Gary Lineker after a tweet comparing the UK government’s asylum‑seeker policy to “1930s Germany.” Lineker’s dismissal prompted co‑hosts and commentators to refuse appearances on the Saturday football highlights show, and radio commentators, as well as some Premier League managers and players, boycotted interviews with the BBC, according to Mail Online.
Uncertainty about Match of the Day 2’s format grew when presenter Mark Chapman stepped down from his BBC radio duties on Saturday. Former England striker Jermain Defoe also announced he was withdrawing from his punditry role on the programme, tweeting, “It’s always such a privilege to work with BBC MOTD. But tomorrow I have taken the decision to stand down from my punditry duties.”
Saturday’s broadcast of MOTD lasted only 20 minutes, marking a chaotic day for the BBC that forced the cancellation of most of its football coverage. The show was rebranded as “Premier League Highlights” for its evening airing and consisted mainly of short highlight clips from the day’s matches. Between each clip, a graphic displayed the teams involved, and the usual match commentary was replaced by stadium crowd noise.
