Two Nigerian state governors have thrown their full political weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, calling it their top priority. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Umo Eno, made their positions clear in separate interviews on ARISE Television, insisting the president deserves a second term for economic reforms that have boosted state revenues and sparked unprecedented local development.
Oborevwori declared that his own re-election was already settled, leaving him free to focus entirely on securing victory for Tinubu. “That is my number one project. It’s bigger than any other project,” he said. The governor argued that returning Tinubu to office would strengthen Delta’s voice at the national level, noting the president is an in-law to the state through his wife Oluremi, an Itsekiri woman. “You need to be evil to vote against your in-law. It’s a family affair,” Oborevwori added.
He dismissed the possibility of a repeat of the 2023 election, when Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won Delta. Oborevwori said his administration had built bridges across ethnic and religious lines, particularly with the Igbo and Christian communities that backed Obi. “What happened that time will not happen again,” he assured.
The governor credited Tinubu’s economic reforms for improving Delta’s financial position, saying they had enabled more state spending on projects. He also downplayed any threat from former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, who recently left the APC. “We saw it coming. He never consulted anybody,” Oborevwori said.
Across in Akwa Ibom, Governor Eno pointed to tangible results from federal reforms. He listed 1,300 kilometers of roads, 458 compassionate homes, support for 12,000 elders, and new schools with solar-powered computer labs in all 31 local government areas. “Funding is from the presidency,” Eno stressed, adding that the Calabar-Lagos superhighway passing through his state would transform the region.
Eno cited improved macroeconomic indicators as further justification for Tinubu’s re-election. “Look at the dollar that is now stable. Look at our foreign reserves. Look at the country’s GDP,” he said. He urged stakeholders to rally behind Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling the opportunity to be Nigeria’s number three citizen a rare one.
