The Longhorns are dancing on the dirt of Devon Park once again. In a stunning display of grit and clutch plays, No. 2 Texas swept No. 11 Texas Tech on Thursday to claim their second consecutive Women’s College World Series championship. It’s the first time in over a decade that a program not named Oklahoma has hoisted back-to-back trophies in Division I softball.
The game turned on a single, costly mistake. With the score tight in the fifth inning, Texas Tech shortstop Hailey Toney committed a two-run error that swung momentum firmly to the Longhorns. From there, pitchers Citlaly Gutierrez and Teagan Kavan locked down the Red Raiders, allowing just one run en route to a 4-1 victory in Game 2 of the best-of-three series.
Kavan, last year’s WCWS Most Outstanding Player, entered in relief of Gutierrez in the sixth inning. Over two appearances in the championship series, she racked up 11 strikeouts, including a complete-game gem in Game 1. The Longhorns rewarded her with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Kayden Henry launched a solo home run, and Leighann Goode followed with a single to right field that slipped through the glove of Lauren Allred, sealing the win.
Texas becomes just the fifth Division I softball program to win back-to-back national titles at the WCWS, and the first since Oklahoma’s reign to achieve the feat. The Longhorns have now defeated NiJaree Canady and the Red Raiders for both of their championships.
The series was effectively decided in the first inning of Game 1. Texas exploded for five runs, and while Texas Tech’s Mia Williams cut the deficit with a two-run homer in the fifth, the Longhorns answered with an insurance run on a sacrifice fly from Viviana Martinez in the sixth, taking the opener 7-3.
