Xbox Disc-to-Digital Feature Detailed in Leaked Microsoft Document

Microsoft is reportedly preparing to launch a feature that would allow Xbox players to convert their physical game libraries into digital licences, marking a significant step toward an all-digital future for the platform. According to documents obtained by The Verge, the “disc-to-digital” programme has undergone internal testing and was the subject of a recent communication sent by Microsoft to game developers.

The leaked document outlines a system where players insert an Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a console equipped with a disc drive. The console would then grant a digital entitlement for that title, tethered to both the specific disc and the player’s account. This licence would persist across the user’s devices, but crucially, the entitlement would transfer to a new user if the physical disc is sold, Traded, or lent. The mechanism preserves the traditional ability to share or resell games while eliminating the need for the disc to remain in the drive during play.

The document indicated that a public beta for Xbox Insiders was planned for July, with general availability targeting August. However, the report notes that the beta phase was reportedly delayed, leaving the immediate timeline uncertain. Microsoft has not formally announced the feature, though the distribution of technical documentation to developers suggests a public reveal may be imminent.

The initiative arrives as the industry broadly shifts away from physical media. Sony announced last month that it will cease production of game discs for new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. Reports indicate Microsoft is likely to follow a similar trajectory for Xbox. The disc-to-digital programme would offer a migration path for players with extensive physical collections spanning years, ensuring those purchases retain value on future hardware. The next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, is also widely rumoured to forego a disc drive entirely.

Last week, Sony stated it would “cautiously” proceed with its plan to end disc production, expressing confidence that the move would not negatively impact its gaming business. As both platform holders prepare for a discless era, Microsoft’s proposed solution addresses a primary consumer concern: the preservation of existing physical libraries in a digital-only ecosystem.
