The Accord Party has strongly condemned the freezing of Osun State government accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, describing the action as a blatant injustice and an illegal plot to destabilize the state ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
In a statement signed by the party’s national leader, Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, Accord labeled the EFCC’s move an act of impunity and recklessness that would be challenged in court. The party alleged the anti-graft agency acted without a court order, fully aware that a court would not grant such a request, and accused it of colluding with the police to paralyze governance and pave the way for the opposition All Progressives Congress.
Accord insisted the people of Osun have rejected the APC due to hardship inflicted on the state, warning that any attempt to capture the state using federal might would fail. The party claimed the account freeze is part of a wider strategy to deploy security agencies to subdue residents and make the state ungovernable before the poll.
The statement raised alarm over rising political tension, accusing the police of partisanship, harassment, intimidation, and the arrest and detention of Accord members and supporters across Abuja, Osun, and Nasarawa states. It demanded the unconditional release of all detained supporters, citing violations of their fundamental rights.
Chief Mgbudem called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure a free, fair, credible, and peaceful election by guaranteeing the neutrality of security agencies and the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission. He urged the President to call overzealous security agents and anti-democratic forces to order, stressing that the ambition of no politician is worth the blood of citizens.
Accord expressed confidence that the rule of law would prevail, referencing a previous failed attempt to deregister the party. The party warned that Nigerians would resist any manipulation of the electoral process, urging stakeholders to learn from past upheavals in the western region and tow the path of patriotism, dignity, and professionalism.
