Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have neutralised two suspected terrorists, apprehended a bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle during an operation in Plateau State, according to an operational report released to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on August 10 at Nwur village in Langtang North Local Government Area. The report states that troops had mobilised with an apprehended suspected bandit to recover a rifle allegedly concealed by the suspect in the area.
While approaching the village, the troops came under attack and responded with fire, neutralising two attackers. The arrested suspect accompanying the troops was also killed during the encounter. No military personnel were injured.
Following the engagement, troops exploited the area and recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Operations have continued to apprehend and neutralise other fleeing members of the suspected criminal syndicate.
The development marks another kinetic action by the multi-security task force operating across Nigeria’s North Central region, where competing farmer-herder tensions and criminal banditry have fuelled cycles of violence. Plateau State has remained a flashpoint, with recurring attacks on rural communities prompting sustained military deployments.
Operation Enduring Peace, launched as part of broader efforts to restore stability in the region, combines ground patrols, intelligence-led raids and community engagement. Commanders have emphasised the importance of human intelligence in locating hidden weapons caches and identifying syndicate networks operating across porous local government boundaries.
Security analysts note that while tactical successes such as weapons recoveries and neutralisations disrupt immediate threats, sustainable peace requires parallel political dialogue, justice reform and economic interventions addressing root causes of recruitment into criminal groups.
The military has not disclosed the identities of those neutralised or the apprehended suspect, citing ongoing investigations. NAN reports that the recovered items have been handed over for forensic examination as troops maintain presence in the general area.
Residents of Langtang North have urged authorities to sustain operations beyond reactive deployments, calling for permanent security outposts and support for displaced farmers seeking to return to their lands.
