Veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen has agreed to a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts, ending an extended stint in free agency. The deal, first reported by Jordan Schultz, carries a maximum value of $8.32 million and reunites the six-time Pro Bowler with head coach Shane Steichen.
Allen arrives in Indianapolis with a decorated résumé built largely over 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he established himself as one of the league’s most reliable route runners. A third-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, he finished his Chargers tenure with 1,055 career receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns. He placed second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting during his debut campaign and earned his most recent Pro Bowl nod following the 2023 season. Allen spent the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears before his release earlier this offseason.
The signing adds immediate pedigree to a Colts receiving corps navigating early uncertainty. Alec Pierce, the team’s leading receiver in 2023, remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list while recovering from an ankle injury. In his absence, Allen slots into a room featuring Josh Downs, Ashton Dulin, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Anthony Gould, and Laquon Treadwell.
Familiarity with the offensive structure should accelerate Allen’s integration. Steichen served on the Chargers’ coaching staff in various roles from 2014 through 2020, overlapping with the prime of Allen’s career. That shared history provides a foundation for the 32-year-old to contribute quickly within a scheme that emphasizes timing and separation.
For Indianapolis, the low-risk acquisition addresses a pressing need for veteran savvy and red-zone efficiency alongside second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson. Allen’s ability to work the middle of the field and convert critical third downs offers a security blanket that complements the explosiveness of Downs and the developing downfield threats on the roster.
The Colts continue to shape their offensive identity around Richardson’s dual-threat capability, and Allen’s presence provides a proven checkpoint for a passing game seeking consistency.
