Edo State Police Commissioner Patrick Daaor has confirmed the remand of three suspects in separate cases of child sexual abuse, underscoring a disturbing pattern of violence against minors in the state.
A 52-year-old home tutor, Daniel Erumudonmoh Okhuilegbe, has been remanded at Oko Correctional Centre in Benin City for allegedly defiling his 13-year-old pupil. The offence is said to have occurred earlier this month. Daaor told journalists in Benin that the suspect, who had been engaged as a private lesson teacher, abused the trust placed in him by the child’s family. Following the conclusion of investigations, Okhuilegbe was arraigned before the Benin High Court and remanded in custody.
In a second case, a 42-year-old man has been remanded at Benin Correctional Centre for allegedly raping his 15-year-old daughter. The incident reportedly took place at Iyahmo in Etsako West Local Government Area. The suspect was transferred to the state police headquarters for discreet investigation before being charged to court and remanded pending further proceedings.
The third arrest involves 26-year-old Otaru Jonathan, who is accused of defiling a 14-year-old girl in Afokpella community, Etsako East Local Government Area. According to preliminary findings, Jonathan lured the minor on a motorcycle to an uncompleted building where he allegedly had unlawful sexual intercourse with her and subsequently gave her N2,000. The survivor has been taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and care. Jonathan remains in police custody as investigations continue ahead of his arraignment.
Daaor disclosed the developments while parading a number of arrested criminal suspects at the state command headquarters. He emphasized that the command is prioritizing the protection of children and ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
The cluster of cases has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of minors, particularly in domestic and educational settings. Child rights advocates have called for stricter vetting of private tutors and stronger community reporting mechanisms. The police have assured the public that investigations are thorough and that all suspects will be prosecuted without delay.
