Lagos REC, Olusegun Agbaje – The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in ten polling units located in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lekki. INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, Segun Agbaje, announced the decision while addressing reporters at the VGC on Saturday.
Agbaje explained that members of the National Youth Service Corps serving as ad‑hoc staff in the area were reluctant to enter the VGC estate because they claimed they had been held hostage during the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections. Consequently, the ad‑hoc staff placed voting materials outside the estate. However, residents said they did not feel secure due to fears of hoodlums invading and disrupting the process, and therefore could not cast their votes.
He noted that the situation was beyond the capacity of the security agents present, prompting him and his team to visit the area. “We have eight polling units here with 6,024 registered voters, of whom 5,624 have their PVCs,” Agbaje said. He added that two additional polling units at the estate’s main gate were also affected, bringing the total to eight inside the estate and two outside.
After consulting with relevant authorities and receiving a directive from the national headquarters, Agbaje announced that the elections would be remobilised for tomorrow (Sunday) at 8:30 a.m. “By 8:30 a.m. tomorrow we will reconvene here,” he affirmed. He also mentioned that the commission had obtained assurances from the chairman of the estate’s security committee regarding the safety of staff and voters.
