Agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed on Sunday at the Ogun State collation centre during the 2023 governorship election. The dispute began when PDP agent Sunkanmi Oyejide stood up to protest the presence of three APC representatives at the centre. Oyejide accused the APC of deliberately disrupting the PDP’s strongholds in the state to disenfranchise its members, stating, “If you look at it very well, the ruling party disrupted the PDP strongholds and disenfranchised our members. We want you to take a critical look at it and investigate it. The process must be transparent.”
APC agent Adelani rejected Oyejide’s allegations. The confrontation halted the collation process for about fifteen minutes before normalcy returned. State Independent National Electoral Returning Officer Prof. Kayode Adebowale intervened to resolve the disagreement, asking the parties to select one of the three APC agents present at the centre. He also challenged the PDP’s claim of strongholds, emphasizing that the electoral rules had been followed. “We don’t recognise strongholds. The rules have been followed,” Adebowale said.
After the brief interruption, the collation resumed as additional local government collation officers presented the results.
