A few hours after the House of Assembly election in Ondo State, the Police Command announced that it had arrested numerous suspected criminals linked to various crises that erupted in several areas during the poll. Violence was reported in some locations, including the Ute Community in Ose Local Government Area, where suspected political thugs hijacked and destroyed ballot boxes and other voting materials. In Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area, two people—including a police officer—were struck by stray bullets amid the unrest.
In a statement released on Sunday, police spokesperson Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami said that suspects were apprehended by security agents across different parts of the state during the election. She did not disclose the exact number of arrests at the time of filing the report. The Police Public Relations Officer added that the Ondo State Police Command had detained individuals involved in offenses such as unlawful possession of firearms, snatching of ballot boxes, attempted murder, and serious assault. Some of the suspects are currently in the custody of the military.
All cases related to electoral offenses will be coordinated and addressed in accordance with the Electoral Act after the investigations are completed. The command expressed appreciation for the cooperation of sister agencies and law‑abiding citizens in maintaining law and order throughout the election period. It reaffirmed its commitment to serving the people of Ondo State with a high sense of responsibility, professionalism, and adherence to universal policing best practices.
