A 26‑year‑old lady, Rukayat Shittu, has been declared the winner of the Kwara State House of Assembly election. She contested under the banner of the ruling All Progressives Congress. The Independent National Electoral Commission’s returning officer, Professor Hakeem Ijaya, announced that Shittu polled 7,521 votes, beating her Peoples Democratic Party rival, who received 6,957 votes.
Shittu attended Baptist LGA Primary School and later Government Day Secondary School in Oku‑Ire, Ilorin. She then enrolled at Kwara State College of Islamic and Legal Studies, where she obtained a diploma in Mass Communication and Islamic Studies. She hails from Manyan in the Onire District of Kwara State, a village that had never before been represented politically in her constituency.
She graduated from the National Open University of Nigeria, where she served as a student representative during her undergraduate studies. Shittu also made history as the first female Senate President of the Congress of the Open University of Nigeria and held the position of Publicity Secretary for the pro‑democracy group Kwara Must Change.
With her election, the 26‑year‑old will represent the Owode/Onire Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly.
