Two female candidates have been declared winners in the recent House of Assembly election in Kogi State. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Omotayo Adeleye‑Ishaya and Mrs. Comfort Nwuchola won the Ijumu and Ibaji state constituency seats, respectively. Both candidates ran on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform and will become the first women to represent their constituencies in the Kogi Assembly.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the results on Sunday. In Ijumu, Returning Officer Mrs. Grace Haruna announced at the collation centre in Iyara that Adeleye‑Ishaya secured 8,568 votes. Her closest rival, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Alaga Tokunbo, received 3,899 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate obtained 2,648 votes.
In Ibaji, INEC Returning Officer Suleman Danubian reported that APC candidate Comfort Nwuchola garnered 7,718 votes, defeating the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate Peter Egwuda, who received 6,737 votes. The PDP candidate came third with 4,630 votes.
The election also saw Mr. Olawumi Jacob of the APC win the Mopamuro Local Government House of Assembly seat. Returning Officer Prof. Mohammed Suleiman announced that Jacob obtained 4,389 votes, beating his nearest rival, PDP candidate Mr. Jones Daniel, who scored 2,516 votes. ADC candidate Mr. Olabode Makinde placed third with 1,733 votes.
The upcoming Assembly will mark the first time the Kogi House of Assembly includes two female lawmakers simultaneously. Since the first Assembly convened in 1992, only three women have served, each as the sole female member. NAN.
