Everton legend Pat Nevin praised Alex Iwobi for his first‑half performance in the Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening. Everton showed character, coming from behind to earn a point with an 89th‑minute equaliser. After a goalless first half, João Félix broke the deadlock with a low effort that hit the post before going in during the 52nd minute. Two late goals—one from Abdoulaye Doucoure and another from Ellis Reco Simms—ensured Kai Havertz’s strike was worth only a point.
Despite dominating possession, Chelsea managed just three shots on target in the first half, highlighting Everton’s solid defensive work. Nevin, who made 193 appearances for Chelsea, singled out Iwobi for his defensive contribution on the right side, noting his physicality and pace. “At the moment, the player who is standing out for me for Everton is Alex Iwobi. Really impressive,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra. “Over on the right‑hand side, he has had to do all of the defending but his physicality and pace has really helped the team so far.”
The point moves the Toffees two places above the relegation zone, with 26 points from 28 games. Iwobi is expected to report for international duty this week ahead of Nigeria’s double‑header with Guinea‑Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
