The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government, through its relevant agencies, to repair dysfunctional facilities at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. In a plenary session on Thursday, members specifically called for the urgent fixing of escalators and lifts at airports nationwide, as well as the provision of additional air‑side buses and conveyor belts. The House also tasked its Committee on Aviation with ensuring compliance with the resolution and reporting back within one month for further legislative action.
According to data from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) is the nation’s second‑busiest airport after Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. House member Onofiok Luke moved a motion of urgent public importance concerning the Abuja airport, which was unanimously adopted. The motion, titled “Call on the Federal Government to Repair Dysfunctional Facilities and Provide New Infrastructure at the Federal Airports for Efficient Service Delivery to Air Travellers,” highlighted the breakdown of facilities and the lack of essential infrastructure at several federal airports, causing inconvenience, difficulty, and delays for air travellers.
Luke noted that the escalator and lift at NAIA, which normally facilitate passenger movement to the departure lounge, are out of service, forcing passengers to use the staircase. He expressed concern that this dysfunction hampers the free movement of travellers and creates serious inconvenience for the elderly and those with disabilities. Additionally, the insufficiency of air‑side buses during peak hours (10 am to 12 noon) and the absence of conveyor belts to transport passengers’ bags from checkpoints to the baggage‑sorting area are contributing to flight‑departure delays. The House is therefore worried about the hardships these circumstances impose on air travellers.
