Following Nigeria’s shocking 1‑0 defeat to Guinea‑Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Friday, Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has assured fans that the return leg will yield a positive result. Mama Balde’s 29th‑minute goal condemned the Super Eagles to a 0‑1 loss and propelled Guinea‑Bissau’s Wild Dogs to the top of Group A with seven points.
Despite the setback, Everton star Iwobi remains optimistic that the team will respond strongly and secure a win in the second encounter. “Next game, we’re going to do our best to get the result and make the country proud,” he said on Sunday. “As the coach mentioned, we created many chances and had opportunities to score in the first leg, but it’s one of those games where we didn’t find the net. I’m sure that if we play them again, luck could be on our side.”
He emphasized the need for reflection and improvement: “First and foremost, as players and staff, we know we have to react to this result. We will review the game and identify what we need to do better.” Iwobi also called on supporters to remain steadfast: “We want the fans to stick by us and support us because we give 100 percent not just for ourselves but also for our nation. We know we’re privileged to wear the shirt; many people aspire to be in this position.”
