Twenty‑eight years after the United Nations adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—pledging to “remove all obstacles to gender equality and the advancement and empowerment of women”—global support for gender equality remains strong, yet much work remains. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right; it is also essential for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. Women and girls constitute half of the world’s population and therefore half of its potential. Nonetheless, full equality of rights and opportunities between men and women is still far from being achieved, warns UN Women.

On Friday, 24 March 2023, Pinky Ghelani—public speaker, international presenter, and UNHCR High‑Level Influencer—hosted a unique three‑day summit titled **What Women Want 2023** at The Trademark Hotel, Village Market. The event featured more than 82 speakers and attracted close to 1,000 women. It opened with a breakfast networking session and panel that proved both empowering and insightful.

The What Women Want Summit is an annual gathering that brings together a diverse range of speakers to discuss how women can be empowered, inspired, and healed so they can show up fully for their families, their work, and, most importantly, themselves. Topics ranged from earning income and navigating menopause to motherhood, while workshops addressed supporting the boy child and caring for a partner’s mental health.

Caroline Mutoko, CMO of Radio Africa Group, urged women to support one another: “This is what women want—to support and be supported, to celebrate and be celebrated, and to be respected no matter our path. We need to hear each other’s authentic voices, regardless of our stories. When women support each other, amazing things happen. We learn, grow, and achieve our goals together. Supporting other women does not diminish our own success; it enhances it. We can all rise together.”

The three‑day **What Women Want 2023** summit also celebrated Kenyan women who have made history, with photographs displayed throughout the venue courtesy of Camerapix.
