The Federal Government assured on Tuesday that the transition of power from President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to President‑elect Bola Tinubu would be smooth and peaceful. The government also announced that the refurbishment of offices for the President‑elect and Vice‑President‑elect had been completed.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Transition Committee Chairman Boss Mustapha emphasized that ongoing litigation would not impede the hand‑over ceremony. He noted that the facility at Defence House is ready, with security personnel from the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Police Force already deployed to protect the President‑elect and Vice‑President‑elect. Protocol officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Intelligence Agency have also been assigned to both officials. Mustapha affirmed that the transition process is on course and all efforts are being made to ensure a peaceful formal transfer of power on May 29.

Mustapha explained that the security sub‑committee has been tasked with preventing any disruption to the hand‑over. He stressed that, regardless of whether litigation is resolved, it will not halt the process, and the incumbent President will not extend his term. “Nigerians are very law‑abiding people,” he said, adding that candidates who lose an election have avenues to pursue legal inquiries, but the transition will continue unabated to avoid another constitutional crisis. The hand‑over is scheduled for May 29.

As part of the transition, Mustapha announced that four members of the President‑elect’s team will join the federal delegation to the Spring meeting of the World Bank. He also revealed that the President‑elect has nominated Wale Edun and Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu to serve on the transition committee.
