The National Assembly Service Commission confirmed the appointment of Magaji Tambuwal as Clerk to the National Assembly in a statement dated Wednesday, 29 March 2023. The statement, signed by the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Janet Mambula, noted that Tambuwal’s appointment was approved at the 573rd meeting of the commission held on the same day and took immediate effect.
The commission also confirmed Ogunlana Kamoru, Esq., as Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly. The release stated: “The National Assembly Service Commission has confirmed the appointment of Magaji Tambuwal as the Clerk to the National Assembly. His confirmation was approved at the 573rd meeting of the commission held on Wednesday, 29 March 2023.”
Both Tambuwal and Kamoru had previously been appointed as Acting Clerk of the National Assembly (CNA) and Acting Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly (DCNA) on 18 November 2022, following the retirement of Mr. Amos Ojo as Clerk and Mr. Bala Yabani as Deputy Clerk.
Tambuwal’s appointment generated controversy, notably the refusal of former Clerk Ojo to step down. Ojo, whose pre‑retirement leave was scheduled for November 2022 and whose tenure was set to end on 14 February 2023, argued that he could not leave office because he needed to help conclude the passage of the 2023 Budget and the Constitution Amendment bills.
Before becoming Clerk, Magaji Tambuwal served as Secretary of the Directorate of Finance and Accounts within the National Assembly Service Commission.
