A 47‑year‑old Chinese national, Mr. Frank Geng‑Quangrong, is on trial for culpable homicide. During cross‑examination before the Kano High Court, he admitted stabbing his 22‑year‑old Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani. The defendant, who lives in the Railway quarters of Kano, told the court that a dispute had arisen between him and the deceased. He explained that he arrived in Nigeria in 2019 to work as a Marketing and Sales Manager for BBY Textile Company, earning N1.5 million per month and running additional side businesses.
Geng‑Quangrong claimed that on the day of the incident he stabbed Ummukulsum without intending to kill her after she pushed him onto the bed. He said he escaped through a window because the door was locked from the outside, intended to take her to the hospital, but was arrested when police arrived.
The defence counsel, Mr. Muhammad Dan’azumi, called Dr. Abdullahi Abubakar, a urologist, as a second witness. Dr. Abubakar, who has practiced for over 30 years and taught at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for 13 years, testified that Geng‑Quangrong had previously alleged the victim had injured his genitals. He explained that the testicles are highly sensitive; trauma can trigger a fight‑or‑flight response, inflammation, erectile dysfunction, urinary problems, a drop in blood pressure, reduced oxygen to the brain, fainting, or shock, prompting a person to fight back.
Prosecutor Mrs. Aisha Mahmoud, Kano State Director of Public Prosecution, alleged that the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, stabbed the victim with a knife at her home in Janbulo Quarters on 16 September 2022. She said the offence violates Section 221(b) of the Penal Code. Justice Sanusi Ado‑Ma’aji ordered the defence to provide the prosecution with its witness list and a medical dictionary, and adjourned the case to 6 April 2023 for further cross‑examination and continuation of the defence.
