Family members of Kabirat Sobola, a 22‑year‑old former student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta, are demanding justice after she was allegedly stabbed to death in her room on Friday, 4 February 2023. Kabirat, a National Diploma holder, was found dead with a knife beside her, a deep cut on her neck and chest, and her phone missing. The incident has plunged her family into mourning while police investigations continue.
A relative, who identified herself only as Mrs Sobola, accused the police of failing to conduct a thorough investigation. She said there is no evidence to indict Kabirat’s boyfriend, who is currently detained. According to Mrs Sobola, the boyfriend reported her missing on 3 March, but the police detained him because the disappearance was reported after 24 hours. She recounted that when the family arrived at Kabirat’s house, the door was locked, yet a police tracker indicated the phone was inside. Upon entering, they found a key on the floor, the body on the bed, the knife, and the missing phone. Mrs Sobola claimed the police did not search for the phone or consider it in their report, and that nothing in the findings incriminates the boyfriend. The boyfriend remains in Oba Prison, with a further hearing scheduled for 27 April. “We want justice for the girl; justice must be done,” she said.
State Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident and said the case has been transferred to the command’s Homicide Section. Oyeyemi explained that a boy reported his girlfriend missing at Ibara Police Station. The officer detained the boy until the girl’s parents arrived, as only parents could formally report a missing daughter. After the parents arrived, they all went to the girl’s residence and discovered she had died inside her room. The investigation concluded that the boy killed Kabirat, apparently after a fight, and he was arrested. The case is now under the Homicide Section’s jurisdiction.
