The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, and the Chairperson of the Police Service Commission, retired IGP Solomon Arase, have pledged to end the long‑standing feud between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the PSC over the recruitment of police constables and the promotion of officers from the rank of Deputy Inspector General downwards, among other issues. The two bodies have been at odds since 2020, primarily because of disputes surrounding the recruitment of constables.

Both parties met in the PSC conference room at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to discuss measures that would improve their relationship and identify new pathways for a stronger partnership. Arase emphasized the need for collaboration to create a win‑win situation in which promotion and recruitment matters are resolved smoothly. He told journalists, “We were insisting on collaboration, and we solidly agreed that if there is synergy between us and the police high command, the men will be properly motivated. We don’t have to quarrel about their promotion, appointment, recruitment. Everything will be seamless in a way that it will be a win‑win situation.”

When asked about specific strategies to settle the dispute over which constitutional body should coordinate recruitment, Arase said, “We have all agreed that we are going to set up a small team that will sit together and review what has been done.” He stressed that mutual understanding would make future disagreements a thing of the past.

IGP Baba, speaking to journalists after the meeting, said his visit would improve relations between the police and the PSC and enhance the country’s security situation. He added, “I am at the Police Service Commission to congratulate the assumption to office of the new chairman, IGP Solomon Arase (retd.). When there is proper leadership, guidance, sense of direction, discipline, promotion, appointment, people will be motivated to do the right thing.”
