The parents of Whitney Adeniran, a 12‑year‑old pupil at Chrisland International School Limited who died on 9 February 2023 during the school’s inter‑house sports activities at Agege Sports Stadium, will testify before a coroner’s inquest at the Ogba Magistrate’s Court on 17 April.

Coroner Magistrate Olabisi Fajana announced the schedule on Tuesday while ruling on the school’s application for samples and materials needed to conduct an independent review of the autopsy report prepared by the Lagos State Government. The magistrate also granted the school’s request to consult an independent pathologist to determine the true cause of Whitney’s death.

The state government ordered a coroner’s inquest on 13 February to establish the cause of death. On 2 March, it announced that the autopsy had found Whitney died from asphyxia and electrocution. The inquest was initially set to begin on 4 April. However, on 3 April the school applied to the court for access to items from the Chief Medical Examiner of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital—or a relevant officer—so it could engage an independent pathologist. State counsel Akin George did not oppose the application, and the magistrate adjourned the ruling until 4 April.

When the matter was reconsidered on Tuesday, Magistrate Fajana approved all of the school’s requests. She ordered the Chief Medical Examiner to provide the listed items to the school’s pathologist’s laboratory on the day of the forensic consultation, to be conducted under the supervision of the Chief Medical Examiner or a designated officer. The parents of the deceased are required to be present at the consultation and will testify at the inquest on 17 April.
