The Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested three individuals in connection with counterfeit currency worth N2 million. The corps’ Public Relations Officer, Ikor Uche, announced that the suspects were involved in printing, minting and circulating fake naira and dollar notes.

The three men—Kamallu Sani, 28; Sulieman Yusuf, 29; and Uzaifa Muazu, all from Tsafe Local Government Area—were apprehended in Gusau on 3 April after attempting to pay a Keke Napep rider with a counterfeit N1,000 note. The rider recognized the note as fake and raised the alarm, leading to the arrests.

Investigations revealed that Kamallu Sani had been engaged in the counterfeit trade for a year. He confessed that he was introduced to the operation by Ado Gurgu of Tsafe, who took him to Muazu Abdulkarim of Kwartarkwarshi village. Kamallu admitted that Abdulkarim supplied the fake notes, exchanging each N1,000 counterfeit for N400.

Corps operatives traced the supplier to Kwartarkwarshi village, where the prime suspect, Muazu Abdulkarim, remains at large. Abdulkarim had directed his son, Uzaifa Muazu—who had been involved in the illicit trade with his father—to open a box containing counterfeit naira and dollars. Inside were N60,000 in fake naira and $2,600 in fake dollars, amounting to N1.92 million. During Kamallu’s arrest, N17,000 of the counterfeit currency was recovered.

Uzaifa Muazu, the son of the prime suspect, confessed that his father had been engaged in the counterfeit operation for more than three years and that he obtained the fake money from Kano, accompanied by Ado Gurgu. Commandant Muhammad Muazu warned the public to be cautious of such criminal elements, stating that the Corps has focused its efforts on these mischief‑makers and will clamp down heavily. The suspects will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
