Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that Frank Lampard will serve as caretaker manager until the end of the 2022/23 season. This marks Lampard’s second spell in charge; he previously managed the club from July 2019 to January 2021, guiding Chelsea to a top‑four finish in 2019/20.
Co‑controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali explained that Lampard was rehired because he is a club legend and a Premier League Hall of Famer. In a joint statement on Chelsea’s official website they said: “We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge. Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club. As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season. We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.”
The owners added that the team faces an important match against Wolves on Saturday before turning its focus to the Champions League quarter‑final in Madrid the following week. “We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games,” they concluded.
Lampard, Chelsea’s record goalscorer with 211 strikes, returns to Premier League management after his tenure at Everton ended in January. He takes over a Chelsea side that sits 11th in the table following the departure of Graham Potter last weekend.
