Cape Town — Justice Minister Ronald Lamola confirmed today that the United Arab Emirates will not extradite the Gupta brothers to South Africa. The brothers, Atul and Rajesh Gupta, were to face charges of money laundering and fraud and were implicated in the State Capture report, which exposed deep corruption in the government of former President Jacob Zuma and in several state entities, including Eskom.
The Guptas are close friends of Zuma and have been accused of irregularly awarding tenders, influencing political appointments, and capturing the South African Revenue Service. After Zuma was ousted in 2018, the brothers left South Africa and settled in Dubai, where they were later arrested. Interpol issued a red notice for their arrest in July 2021, seeking them for fraud and money laundering related to a US$1.6 million contract paid to a Gupta‑linked company; the notice has since expired.
IOL reports that the brothers were recently spotted in Switzerland.
